Begonia 'Paul Hernandez'

I acquired this begonia a few months ago and had to share. 'Paul Hernandez' is one of the largest of the shrub begonias, growing moderately fast to 4-6 ft tall and equally wide. It also boasts 2 foot wide palmately lobed leaves which have velvety dark green uppers with an attractive pustulated texture and carmine underside. Mine had bloomed almost continuously with large clusters of upright small white and pink flowers. Place it where it will be bathed in morning sun and then be blanked in shade for the remainder of the day (of course the red coloration is enhanced by brighter light). Keep in soil that will drain quickly and avoid overwatering. Fertilize regularly. Hardy to around 25 °F. This plant was hybridized by Patrick Worley in 1981 by crossing the tall cane species Begonia luxurians with Begonia gehrtii, a rhizomatous species with crinkled leaves.
